It’s a hot buzzword lately…Branding. Everyone is talking about it and how it can help grow your business, successfully help it pivot and transform how your audience connects with you. The question that remains is what exactly is it?
I’m a bit of a “word nerd” I love language and learning its origins so let’s take a peek at the words Branding and Brand themselves.
The dictionary definition of branding first showed up in around 1913 as “the promoting of a product or service by identifying it with a particular brand.”
And a brand is “a class of goods identified by name as the product of a single firm or manufacturer.”
Okay so here’s a revised definition done in super simple terms:
branding is selling things, information, or a helpful activity to a group of people who only want to work with a certain company.
The reason why someone would want to work with a certain company is that they like and trust them.
Liking and trusting a company comes down to its reputation and that is what branding really is.
It’s everything used to create a reputation in the minds of the public at large with the hopes that they will think positive good things about the company and want to work with them.
Usually, a company’s mission statement, ethics, and corporate values will create the base of this reputation. It’s then reinforced through things like corporate culture, public-facing décor like in a restaurant, shop, or office, and also the written and visual components of all of the marketing and advertising materials they have among other things.
Creating a reputation when you are not known or not well known is a lot easier than changing one. So put some time into figuring out who you are as a business and what values you want the business to have before you start on the visual and written components.
To wrap up branding is what you do before you start selling. It’s the base of the reputation – the like and trust factor – for a business. This is why it’s such a big deal to have a good one. After all, who wouldn’t have people lining up to work with you!
