Graphic Design is art with a purpose. It’s meant to be a tool to communicate information between a business and its customers or potential customers. There is a lot of chatter around about whether graphic design helps a business – Does it matter for a business’s bottom line or not?
Good Design actually helps a business enhance sales. Wait? How does the placement of text, colors, and typestyle do that?
As I said in the opener, graphic design has a job. Its job is to get the attention of the potential customer, get them excited to take the next step, and hopefully turn a potential customer into an active one.
While the idea of not judging something based on appearances is important, it, unfortunately, doesn’t always happen. According to an article in the Daily Mail, It takes the human brain just 33 milliseconds to determine if it trusts a person or not. A millisecond is 1/1000 of a second and is faster than blinking your eyes. The same ideology applies to businesses.
This means that people do judge based on appearances and can and will decide how professional and trustworthy the company they are evaluating is based on their graphics. This is why it’s so important to thoroughly review any designer you plan to use. Interview them to get a good understanding of their skills and look over their portfolio to make sure you like the style of their art.
Good Design is something that most people feel more than understand on a logical level, but there is some logic to it. On a practical level, graphic design helps separate a business from its competition and draws its potential customers to them.
Design helps these customers understand, through the use of visuals, how to think and feel about the company. It helps make the company more memorable to the client. If a potential customer remembers you, they are more likely to buy from you. This is why fortune 500 companies have been known to spend millions of dollars per year on their branding and design.
Here’s one last statistic for you! According to Forbes, Consistent brand presentation across all platforms increases revenue up by up to 23 percent.
Simply by having good design and a cohesive look that is used consistently a company stands to not only make more money, but they become memorable and can gain the trust of the people who they serve and that is a job well done.
